Tenerife Introduction
Tenerife - the largest of the Canary Islands - is situated in the
Atlantic Ocean approximately 60 miles off the coast of North Africa
and enjoys the lowest temperature difference between summer and
winter for virtually anywhere in the world. Recent additions to
the choice of courses on the island and the pleasant winter climate
have elevated Tenerife up the list of popular winter golf holiday
destinations.
Most of the golf courses and resorts are conveniently
located in the south of the island close to the Reina Sofia airport,
which is well served from most U.K.airports. Winter sun, great golf
and a good selection of quality hotels and self-catering accommodation
all help to make Tenerife well worthy of consideration for an enjoyable
golf holiday.
THE GOLF COURSES
Tenerife now has a selection of terrific golf
courses that will give enjoyment to golfers of all abilities and
with the year round climate providing perfect growing conditions
the golf courses are nearly always in great condition.

in 2005, Abama is a wonderful recent addition to the golf courses
on Tenerife and includes twenty-two lakes and over 200 different species
of trees around the course. Waterfalls, streams and the constant presence
of spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean add to the enjoyment
of this high end set up. |

| Another Pepe
Gancedo design, and venue of the European tour in its early days,
the course has 27 holes offering three individual 9-hole courses,
and three testing combinations. The North and South loops run close
to the sea and the links course parallel to it. None of the 3 layouts
are particularly long however avoiding the rocky ravines and lava
waste areas is more difficult than it looks at this usually well kept
club. |

| Conveniently
located on the southern coast of Tenerife Amarilla Golf and Country
Club is marked by the spectacular views the course has over the Atlantic
Ocean. Sweeping down to the ocean and back up again Amarilla provides
a stern challenge for the lower handicap golfer while, at the same
time, offers an attractive and enjoyable game for those of a more
modest ability. |
Conveniently
located just outside the resort of the same name Golf Las Americas
has the unique attraction of being located in a gentle amphitheatre
overlooking the sea. Opened in 1997 and designed by John Jacobs the
Las Americas course is an interesting layout yet relatively flat compared
to most of the islands other courses. The impressive clubhouse is
worth a visit. |

in the north west tip of the island a good hours drive from the resorts
in the south Buenavista is a stunning Severiano Ballesteros design
using the spectacular wild natural terrain to produce a course of
shear beauty. An impressive addition to the islands courses and well
worth going out of your way to play it. |
About an hours
drive from the resorts in the south, Real Club de Golf is the second
oldest golf course in the whole of Spain. At 600 metres above sea
level the scenery is fantastic with snow capped Mount Teide providing
a memorable backdrop. Tee times are available to visitors Monday to
Friday and a buggy might be a good idea. |

| Situated
just five kilometres from Playa de las Americas, Golf Costa Adeje
has been built on the site of an old banana plantation. The venue
for the Canaries Spanish Open in 2003, course designer Pepe Gancedo
has made very good use of the existing terrain as well as adding over
50,000 square metres of dry stone walls on which the main fairways
have been laid. The club has some good practice facilities and a superb
clubhouse. |
A
short ferry ride to this splendid remote island course is a small
price to pay compared to the enjoyment this unique layout offers.
The course is not too difficult and the superb scenery should more
than make up for the odd wayward shot. To make a day of it you might
like to dine at the excellent clubhouse or adjacent Hotel Jardin Tecina. |
