Kiawah Island Ocean Course

Pete Dye’s masterpiece creations include The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. The front nine winds through the marshland area, with plenty of tall and intimidating tree-lined fairways, while the back nine features the magnificent dunes, with fewer trees, and much better panoramic views of the ocean. The course is extremely difficult from the back Championship tees and on a windy day is one of the most difficult in the country.

One of the toughest & most famous golf courses in the world, 1991 Ryder Cup Venue, are you up for the challenge?

Although the course was originally intended to sit behind the dunes, Dye’s wife, Alice, suggested raising the entire course to provide players with unobstructed views of Kiawah’s beautiful Atlantic coastline from every hole. However, the improved view made the course significantly more difficult because it exposed it to the area’s brisk and unpredictable sea breezes. Outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland, probably no other golf course in the world is as affected by the wind as much as this one. Depending on the direction and strength of the wind, a player’s score on a hole can vary by up to 8 clubs from one round to the next. The course, designed by Pete Dye in 1991, has no prevailing winds. Dye took this into consideration when designing the course. He actually combined two courses into one, one for an easterly wind and one for a westerly wind.

Kiawah Island, is located just under a 45-minute drive south of Charleston, is home to over a half-dozen golf courses, and is regarded as one of the best golf destinations in the country. Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course is well-known for hosting the 1991 Ryder Cup and the 2012 PGA Championship, where Rory McIlroy won the Wanamaker Trophy. You want to enjoy the game as much as the professionals do once you get to where they play. The Ocean Course provides that incentive because it is a walking-only course. You can stroll alongside your caddie and discuss how to approach every shot you face.

The architecture and layout are one of Dye’s classical creations and one of the best quality public golfing experiences in the world.
Ideal for your next trip to South Carolina.
