Majorca Introduction
Majorca or Mallorca, whichever way you prefer
to spell it and whatever way you wish to pronounce it, is the largest
of the Balearic Islands. An island of
many contrasts, whether you are looking for a luxury hotels, lively
resorts or a quiet beach, Majorca has it all in abundance.
The stunning scenery, quaint villages, spectacular
mountains and secluded bays are often overlooked by the less inquisitive
visitors to the island.
The capital Palma has a beautiful historic
centre dominated by a its spectacular Gothic cathedral which should
not be missed.
The island now has 18 mainly superb golf courses
from which to chose from and with a temperate year round climate
Majorca is in our opinion well worthy of consideration as a top
quality golf holiday destination.

Alcanada golf is situated 60 km north of Palma
on a picturesque stretch of land that slopes gently down to the
edge of the sea. Covered with pine, olive and holm oak trees the
course has a marvellous view of the island of Alcanada, with its
lighthouse in the foreground and the mountains of the Sierra de
Levante in the background. Alcanada, although only opened in 2003
is already regarded as one of the islands best layouts and considered
well worth the journey.
|
Another new
course within easy driving distance of Palma opened in 2006 is the
7000yard Golf Mairois layout. Carved between pine, olive and carob
trees in a classic Mallorcan landscape, players here will enjoy the
challenge of a course that features four lakes and two island greens. |

| The
most southerly course on the island, Andratx, has numerous water hazards
and narrow fairways to contend with. The artificial water hazards
in the guise of Mallorcan style dykes have made this course a more
interesting test and with several raised tees that offer unbeatable
views of the Mallorcan coastline Andratx can be stern challenge on
the best of days. |
Only 9km from
the capital Palma is the newly opened Nicklaus designed Golf Park
Puntiro. Devoid of any housing the course design makes full use of
the unspoilt natural terrain and vegetation. Another impressive addition
to the ever-growing list of quality courses in Majorca, Puntiro is
certain to challenge the other leading courses for the honour of being
rated the islands number one layout. |

| Just
a short drive from Palma, Bendinat is one of Majorcas most popular
courses. Rather narrow undulating fairways mean accurate rather than
longer tee shots will be well rewarded. There are three lakes that
come into play on several holes and sensational views of the island
from numerous vantage points on the course, put this one down as a
must play. |
Just a few minutes
drive from Magalluf the wide fairways are a feature of the Poniente
course, however, dont be fooled into thinking that makes the
course any easier as most slope away unsuspectingly into the waiting
trees. The large greens can be difficult to read, however the main
hazards at Poniente are the many trees that line the fairways. One
of the oldest courses on the island and not a poor hole in the 18.

| Situated
on the northeast coast of the island Canyamel is a golf course of
contrasting front and back nines. Opened in 1989 it offers a hilly
front nine holes with a slightly longer flat back nine Set in a small
valley within typical unspoilt Majorcan countryside the natural terrain
was perfect for designing what is an enjoyable golf course. |
Opened
in 1995 the Pula course regularly features in the top 20 courses in
Spain and was the venue for the Mallorca Classic European tour event
in both 2004 and 2005. In picturesque open countryside Pula is a relatively
flat layout with some great views of the distant mountains and is
of the quality one would expect of a course hosting a PGA European
tour event. |

| The
Capdepera course is situated between the villages of Arta and
Capdepera and is regarded by many as one of the most enjoyable layouts
in Mallorca. It is a pretty course with six lakes and lies hidden
in a picturesque valley surrounded by mountains. Golfers of all standards
should enjoy there round here. |
Close
to Magalluf, the Santa Ponsa course has been host to the Balearic
Open championship on numerous occasions. Water comes into play on
five holes and the flat wide open but sloping fairways are not as
easy to stay on as it appears from the tee. Be aware of the 10th hole,
one of the longest in Europe at just under 650 yards. |
