Accommodation and Courses in RTJ Trail - Muscle Shoals / Florence

Heading north out of Ross Bridge on I65 for a further 140 miles or so brings you to the Muscle Shoals/Florence area close to the Alabama/Tennessee border. Here overlooking the Tennessee river and historic Wilson Dam is the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa and a short drive away two more masterpieces by RTJ - Fighting Joe and The Schoolmaster.

As well as two great golf courses the Muscles Shoals/Florence area figures prominently in the history of rock and R & B through the 1960's and '70's. Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Otis Reading and Lynard Skynyrd are just a few of the hundreds of well known musicians who came to the area to capture the unique sounds of the Muscle Shoals studios.

In nearby Tuscumbia is the former home of the famous blind and deaf author Helen Keller. The subject of numerous books and films her home is now a museum and provides a fascinating insight into her tragic childhood and the amazing person she developed into with the aid of her equally famous nurse Annie Sullivan.

If you are heading back to Atlanta for the flight home and have not had enough golf, there is the option to play two more superb courses at Hampton Cove GC in the Huntsville area or at Silver Lakes which is home to another wonderful 27 holes of golf and a further 9 hole short course.

Climate wise it is advisable to do this northern area of the RTJ Trail between April and June or in October/November. This avoids the high temperatures and humidity that you can experience during the mid-summer months and the cooler months during winter when the dormant bermuda grass means the courses are not at their best.
